Managing the placement

Once you have found a partner, all partners should begin joint planning to ensure aims and objectives of the placement are clear and a system is in place to measure success and learning during the placement.

For all partners, managing placements focuses around two key areas:

Practical arrangements
These include:

  • the activities the trainee will undertake and the structure of the placement
  • induction to the setting and its work – including health and safety and background information
  • methods of communication between partners during the placement to monitor progress
  • travel arrangements for trainees and how they will be reimbursed
  • meetings with trainees
  • post placement reviews

Evaluation

  • Monitoring progress during the placement and embedding the learning for all partners involved after the placement

“I have come away with such a mountain of useful information, strategies and confidence! I've decided to make a portfolio of my experience and I can't wait to show and share my ideas in my new school placement”

“Inspired by the visit, the trainee and her school-based mentor are planning follow-up work linked to the experience. They also plan to ask the pupils what else they would like to learn in relation to the visit”
