Linking with the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) standards

The QTS Standards comprise a set of 33 standards that must be met by all trainee teachers to be awarded Qualified Teacher Status. Since changes to the Standards in 2001, placements in settings other than schools can count towards the total amount of time trainee teachers spend on placement.

Whilst a placement in a setting other than a school can support progression towards a large number of the Standards, the following can be directly addressed through this work:

  • Q5 Recognise and respect the contribution that external professionals can make to young people’s learning
  • Q6 Commitment to collaboration and cooperative working
  • Q8 Ability to innovate, adapting practice where benefits and improvements are identified
  • Q10 Knowledge and understanding of a range of teaching, learning and behaviour management strategies including personalised learning
  • Q19 Making effective personalised provision for pupils
  • Q24 Planning out-of-class work to sustain learners’ progress
  • Q25 Using a range of strategies and resources to teach across a range of abilities and age ranges
  • Q30 Identifying opportunities to learn in out-of-school contexts
  • Q32 Sharing the development of practice with colleagues

“The TDA fully supports the Teaching Outside the Classroom initiative which should provide trainees with the opportunities to gain an understanding of working with the creative and other sectors and give them the skills to bring creativity into their own teaching, hopefully utilising this throughout their teaching careers. The QTS Standards fully allow, and indeed encourage the use of alternative settings as a means for trainees to meet those standards”

Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), 2007

“A good initiative has been the introduction of experience for undergraduates in settings other than schools, such as museums, country houses and art galleries. Trainees’ organisation of sessions for visiting pupils has heightened the emphasis on the QTS Standards related to professional values and practice.”
