Linking theory and practice

The Teacher Education Outside the Classroom paper by Canterbury Christ Church University sets out the case for broadening trainee teachers experience through placements in settings other than schools.

The paper outlines theoretical, philosophical and ethical concepts underpinning education and learning. It considers a number of questions in offering alternative placements alongside school experiences:

  • How do ITT students approach learning?
  • What do we want from education?
  • What are the potential benefits of teaching outside the classroom opportunities?
  • How could we evaluate the impact of teaching outside the classroom on pupils’ learning?
  • What needs to be considered when devising teaching outside the classroom opportunities?

The paper concludes with seven themes which should be considered when developing this work including creativity and innovation, interpersonal relationships and modern technology.

“When children explore the environment they have the opportunity to take initiative, learn survival skills, develop a sense of adventure and build their self-esteem and self reliance. In the same way, outdoor work is a hugely valuable and affirmative experience for many student teachers”

“I will think about the ways that experience of real objects can be much more beneficial and rewarding than just using pictures on the interactive whiteboard. They allow children to use a range of their senses. I think this applies not only to History but also to other subjects such as RE, Geography and Science”
