The Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology and the Durham University Library Archives and Special Collections are close neighours, situated adjacent to the world heritage site of Durham Cathedral and Castle. The Museum and Library are themselves listed historic buildings and our education sessions capitalise on these unique surroundings to provide an inspiring learning experience.
The library collections include over 75,000 books printed before 1850, 100 medieval manuscripts, 3.5km of archives and artefacts, over 30,000 maps and prints and 100,000 photographs. These collections complement those held at the Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology where the displays provide a fascinating insight into the rich heritage of the North East of England, as well as showcasing items from across Europe. Collections range from Neolithic artefacts and important Roman collections to Anglo-Saxon, Medieval and Tudor finds from Durham city and the local area.
In contrast the Oriental Museum is a purpose built, modern gallery, to be found in a park-like setting close to the Botanic Gardens. The Oriental Museum is the only museum in the North East of England dedicated solely to the art and archaeology of the Orient. The remarkable collections reveal the great cultures of Asia; the Near and Middle East; and North Africa. Highlights include one of the finest collections of Chinese artefacts in the UK and an Ancient Egyptian collection of international importance.
