Bridgwater College introduced and pioneered the Forest Shool concept (based on Danish principles) into the UK in 1993 and has developed its innovative Forest School curriculum over 15 years.
One of the very first Early Excellence Centres in 1997, the Centre was designated a DfES Children’s Centre in partnership with Sydenham Family Centre in April 2005. It is the only DCSF Children’s Centre in the UK to be sited in a Further Education College. It provides students at the College, and other Early Years practitioners, with a unique opportunity for training and skills updating. Key features of the Centre:
- Inspirational garden and outdoor play area
- Emphasis on outdoor play
- Unique Forest School curriculum
- Child-led curriculum
- Integration of very young children with older children
- Observation of children’s schemas
- Planning of individual programmes for every child
- Keyworker system giving consistency of care
