We are a part of the Public Library Service run by Cumbria County Council. The Daniel Hay Library is one of the two main libraries in the West Group, which has a network of 20+ branches, from Millom in the south, to Silloth in the north and going as far east as Keswick. Any trainee teacher choosing the Daniel Hay Library as a placement venue would have the chance to undertake work across this area.
Each year we take part in the Summer Reading Challenge, which asks children aged 4 to 12 to read at least 6 books over the course of the summer holiday. They collect incentives along the way and there is a final prize, plus certificate for all who complete the challenge.
To support children in doing the challenge we run activities in the libraries in the area. This year's theme is "Team Read", to tie in with the Olympics and we aim to run activities that are sport/game related.
The opportunities we offer range from working directly with children and young people to carrying out work behind the scenes, such as producing themed booklists. We are open to any suggestions that students might have about a project they would like to run, and are happy to chat to people about their ideas.
