PLaying for Success (PfS) is a national initiative operating in 161 centres based in a variety of sporting venues. The scheme targets pupils between the ages 9-13 who are currently underachieving in school.

PFS mainly focusses on literacy, numeracy and ICT skills working with pupils within the Key Skills and Every Child Matters frameworks, providing individually tailored programmes to meet pupils' needs.

The initiative at Barnsley has been operating successfully for the past nine years.

The centre has the Quality in Study Support (QISS) at Established level and is hoping to become a Mentoring and Befriending Approved Provider.

We currently operate with the support of a variety of volunteer mentors, some of whom are ex-teachers, PGCE students, Education Degree students and AimHigher Ambassadors.

From time to time we also have work experience placements with Year 10 and 11 pupils, organised through Business and Education South Yorkshire (BSEY)

Barnsley Football Club works in partnership with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and the Department for Children, Schools and Families to provide the PFS opportunity as its core business to all schools within the borough wishing to take part. Each school may send 12 pupils over a 6 week period to experience learning in a fun and motivational way using the power and alternative ethos which a sporting venue offers.

Using mentors from a variety of backgrounds makes a huge difference to pupil confidence, self-esteem and motivation.
