Birkenhead Park has recently been restored back to its Victorian glory. As part of this restoration a 3 year project has been set up called 'Its My Park: Birkenhead Park Community Involvement and Heritage Education Project'. The project aims to create an education programme for Birkenhead Park, the worlds first public park, for local schools to use as part of their formal education.
We seek to increase school participation and involvement in the park and make it a thriving community park.
The project has been running for 11 months and so far we have developed a range of Educational Tours and Workshops for KS1 and 2 and we are currently working on designing a programme for KS3 and 4. We run education tours and workshops in the following curriculum areas; History, Science and Geography but we are always looking to offer more opportunities for schools to come to the park. We also offer many seasonal activities for schools to use.
Currently we have 3 members of staff (an Education Officer and 2 Rangers) who run the tours/workshops but we are looking to increase the amount of staff to run the tours and workshops and work with school groups. We are seeking to train volunteers or teacher trainees to assist and run tours with primary and secondary school children.
We have a large number of primary schools that use the education facilities at the park and are increasingly bringing secondary schools into the park.
