Cumbria Archive Service offers a wealth of primary resources and expertise to schools and teachers. These sources can enhance the learning experiences of children and young people, bring topics to life and introduce children to our written heritage.
We care for parish registers, other church records, wills, electoral registers, maps and plans, poor law records, court records, and photographs. The archives of many families, businesses, local authorities, solicitors, societies and schools are also deposited in its Record Offices.
Cumbria Archive Service offers a broad range of learning opportunities for pupils and professional development opportunities for teachers. This includes:
- Hosting school visits
- Visiting schools with documents
- Advice to teachers on sources and topics
- Photocopy and electronic images of original documents
- Resource packs
- Themed travelling displays
- Hosting in service training sessions
- Learning Links projects
- Work experience opportunities for students and trainee teachers
Our resources are relevant to National Curriculum: Key Stages 1 to 4 and A Level and can be used creatively across the curriculum for example in drama, art, maths, science, citizenship, literacy, as well as history and geography.
