We are a large provider of ITT, with nearly 2000 students per year studying on various routes to QTS. We worked very successfully last year with 8 settings other than schools, piloting the evaluation and planning framework which we had written with the TOTC project. The students evaluated the experience very positively indeed, as did the settings. One described the week long experience and research work as the most important of her PGCE year. All students left the course thoroughly committed to teaching outside the classroom and to working with settings other than schools, but also more profoundly aware of their own beliefs and values as teachers. The placements also fitted very well with their journey towards meeting the standards for QTS.
We have also worked in our primary education department for a number of years with a range of local schools exploring creative practice through the outdoor environment. Recently we set up an innovative professional development link with the John Aspinall Foundation through our Department of Professional Development.
This year, we are working with a range of local museums to provide work-related placements for our 14-19 student teachers. We are also continuing the placements for PGCE primary students in local settings (up to 9 required) and our undergraduate students are undertaking 4 week placements in settings of their own choosing in May 2009.
