What will trainees do on placement?

There are numerous activities trainee teachers can undertake in settings other than schools to generate creative behaviours and thinking skills and increase subject knowledge. Trainees should be involved in planning activities to ensure all partners have ownership of the process.

Activities trainees can undertake on placement include:

  • shadowing teaching sessions led by staff from settings
  • developing resources for use in school and the setting
  • direct teaching of education sessions
  • developing or delivering workshops
  • creating e-learning resources
  • delivering outreach sessions
  • creating a lesson plan using the setting
  • plan for an outside of school visit
  • involvement in educational project work
  • planning and policy development

“It’s been important to see pupils transformed during a museum session. Watching the children when they arrive, not all of them are switched on to learning, but at the end of the session their eyes light up if you ask them about what they have learnt”

Trainee teacher, West Midlands

“I truly believe that the experience was valuable as part of my teaching practice. It was useful to interact with pupils and teachers in a setting other than the normal school environment. The museum has given me so many ideas for resources and interesting ways to teach topics”

“It was so much easier to plan an activity while actually being in the out of classroom setting. The activity can enhance pupils’ previous knowledge of the topic and bring it to life in new and exciting surroundings”

Trainee teacher, London

“I will certainly use lots of the ideas back in the classroom to develop the children’s speaking, listening and storytelling skills”

Trainee teacher, MLA West Midlands

“I’ve been able to plan a follow-up session that brings our class back to the museum. I would never have known or even thought to do this if I hadn’t been here”
