ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project started with a one day outreach to Leeds University in March 2010 which has been documented at can be downloaded from the MLA website. http://research.mla.gov.uk/case-studies/display-case-study.php?dm=nrm&q=1 This day introduced students to the idea of working with objects and the benefits of working with museum educators, and focused on the topic of citizenship.
The two-day event in June was carefully structured to first immerse trainee teachers in the full range of museum experiences at the Royal Armouries Museum including a theoretical underpinning of museum education and curriculum planning led by Roy Hughes, FHA, from Leeds University. Day 2 provided a more reflective experience for the trainee teachers and was structured to facilitate student planning and engagement.
OUTCOMES
As Trainee Teachers said
“[The days] Provided useful ideas on how to use the museum, objects and [I now] have the confidence to use objects in class and to building planning around and create cross-curricular links”
“Changed my perceptions of museums in general and particularly Royal Armouries – especially in terms of engaging a KS1 Trainee teacher.”
The creation of a DVD to disseminate the project was also undertaken. If you would like a copy please contact us.
