ITT and Libraries: Literature Matters

The overarching theme of the project was to support the development of independent reading in classrooms with a particular emphasis on diversity. Planning with the University tutors was key to the success of the project and the time invested in achieving a clear understanding of the course requirements was essential for SLS staff. University staff similarly appreciated gaining a clearer understanding of the offer that libraries are able to make and the value of the professional expertise available to students.

“We worked with 33 ITT students from Brookes University who had spent one week training at the National Gallery before bringing their class to the Ashmolean to deliver a teaching session in front of their chosen painting. This meant that more than 500 children came to the museum, 4 schools had not been to the Museum before and 8 schools had not visited the Western Art Galleries”

London setting

“Organising such a complex trip in such a supportive and enthusiastic setting might encourage me to organise out of school learning in the future. I am still very enthusiastic about the placement. I have learnt about how the education service in the museums works, and how to organise a major outing. The experience for the children was of a much better quality than anything I could have put together outside the placement”
